Illustrated Zoom presentation at 7.30pm.
This talk surveyed the research conducted by the Heritage Trust into the significant stained glass at St Martin’s – by Morris & Co (involving William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown), Christopher Whall, Herbert Bryans, and Archibald Nicholson. It pointed out that the Morris windows have deteriorated over time (a problem which St Martin’s shares with many other churches), but could now be restored. It explained how a stained glass conservation firm had helped the Trust to understand the new techniques: ‘reverse cold painting’ and ‘environmental protective glazing’; and urged that we consider adopting these.
