Illustrated lecture in church at 7.30 pm
Alison Gilchrist, conservation specialist since 2011 at Barley Studio, York (one of Britain’s leaders in ‘design and mastery in stained glass’), describes her work restoring Victorian stained glass.
The Heritage Trust first came into contact with Barley Studio, of York, in 2018 through a chance personal connection. Discovering that Barley Studio held a very high (perhaps the highest) place among British stained glass workshops, the Trust commissioned a condition report on all the stained glass at St Martin’s (delivered January 2019). This was carried out by Alison Gilchrist, who has continued to advise us and has visited St Martin’s several times. Her MA thesis, on ‘“The tears wept by our windows”: severe paint loss from stained glass windows of the mid-nineteenth century’ (2010) was pioneering work, and we look forward to hearing her updating and enlarging on her research.
